    Day 1: Frankfurt - Rothenburg
Depart from Frankfurt for a picturesque drive through the Spessart mountains to Wuerzburg, on the banks of the river Main. Continue along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg Ob der Tauber, Germany's well-preserved 'Jewel of the Middle Ages', with its ramparts, city gates and town hall. See the Jakobskirche (church) with an altar built by the famous wood-carver, Tilman Riemenschneider. Upon arrival in Rothenburg, a taxi will take you to your hotel. In the afternoon or evening join the city walk with a local guide or historic Night Watchman in Rothenburg.

    Overnight: Hotel Spitzweg or similar

    Day 2: Rothenburg - Hohenschwangau (B)
After breakfast, a taxi will meet you at your hotel and take you to the bus stop. Your coach drives along the Romantic Road passing such the picturesque villages of Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen and Donauworth with their high gabled houses and cobbled stone streets. You'll arrive in Hohenschwangau via Augsburg a metropolis for trade during the middle ages.

    Overnight: Hotel Muller or similar

    Day 3: Hohenschwangau - Munich (B)
Your entrance tickets for the Neuschwanstein Castle are waiting for you at the front desk of your hotel. Visit the famous 'Cinderella Castle', built by King Ludwig II. This castle brings back memories of children's fairy tale stories. A breathtaking sight in the Pollat River gorge, the castle was well equipped with revolutionary (at that time) technical devices. In the late afternoon you'll continue to Munich, where your tour ends at approximately 7.00pm.

This 3-day adventure is clearly laid out with vouchers for each days activities. You can participate in as much as you want or casually enjoy your day at your own pace. It was perfect in terms of doing what you want, eating when you want, and setting your own pace.

An exceptional tour. The bus departed Frankfurt about 20 min. late, but the other days it was on time. The drivers did not speak fluent English, but clearly communicated where to be and when. The hotels were clean with polite staff they had plentiful buffet breakfasts.
At each destination we used our travel book to make the most of our time and money. In Rothenburg we did a self-guided town walk, visited the Medieval Torture Museum, and used our provided voucher for the Nightwatchmen's tour. The next day we walked the top of the city wall and wandered down into the surrounding countryside.
Between Rothenburg and Hohenschwangau the bus stopped at many towns which broke up the long ride with a chance to grab a local Bier or a visit a historical site.
In Hohenschwangau we ate a delicious German dinner and sipped a bottle of Austrian white wine at the recommended Hotel Muller restaurant. The next day we visited both castles and between the tours enjoyed a snack on the benches beside the Alpsee. The bus ride back to Munich was efficient.

My tip: To get the most of this tour do your research on what to do at each stop on the bus before you arrive. We googled the extravagant life and mysterious death of Ludwig II for more salacious detail than was covered in either castle tour.
