This tour is through a company called City Wonders, and it was actually the second one I took through their company in Rome. Having enjoyed the first tour of Vatican City, I had high hopes for this one and I was not disappointed.
The tour starts bright and early in the Piazza del Popolo. And just because we aren't in Pompeii yet does not mean that the history will wait. We got a little lesson about the ancient gate to Rome as we walked through it by our lovely guide Robert. We hopped into a tour bus and got settled for a long drive. We were paired with another Pompeii group from the same company on the bus and so we were lucky to have Antoinella as our second tour guide for the bus portion of the trip.
A side note about the bus: if you are tall, the leg room is not ideal. I'm 5'10 and my knees were in the back of the seat in from of me.
The bus trip was extremely enjoyable. Robert told us about the founding myth of Rome and Antoinella told us about the region of Italy we would be visiting and the food and drink that were native to it. The trip was broken up by a brief stop at a cafe about halfway to Pompeii. A note about the cafe: they only take cash, so make sure you have some euro. I did not. No breakfast for me.
We arrived in Naples for the first stop, which in the wintertime is the Archeological Museum in Naples. I was a bit disappointed initially to miss our on hiking Vesuvius, but I enjoyed the museum. As it happens, all of the artifacts that do not remain in Pompeii are in this museum, so it was a wonderful warm up. Robert put it the best, really. Being able to see the everyday items that these people used in their daily lives makes it all the more real when you see the city later on in the day.
Food is provided for you at lunch, a personal pizza for each person. My friend chose one of the options and I chose the other and we split them in half. It's more food than you need, and it's delicious. I found it better than the Roman pizza I'd been eating.
From there we went to Pompeii. We had a second guide for the Pompeii portion, and she was lovely as well. A little less charismatic than Robert, but very knowledgeable and intelligent. We were led through a few of the main areas of Pompeii and we learned a good deal about what life was like for the people. Some things were just incredible to see. Like life was just frozen permanently. Eerie but amazing.
Our tour was only about two hours or so. Not as long as I would have liked, but you can't expect much more on a day trip from Rome. The drive cuts into the time allotted in the city unfortunately, and we see a seriously small portion of Pompeii. Maybe an 8th of what has been excavated. possibly less. But it isn't any less worth the experience.
The drive back includes another comfort stop at the cafe and I bought a number of souvenirs there. After that, we headed back to Rome. Robert was awesome on the way back. He gave us a number of tips on how to eat like a true Italian and avoid the tourist traps. Great advice.
We got back nearly exactly 12 hours after we left that morning. It was a seriously long day, and you can't get any more sightseeing in if you tried, but I enjoyed the day trip immensely. If you have a day to spare in Rome, this is definitely a trip you should consider.
