Private Walking Tour: Best of Athens

Syntagma Metro station, where your tour begins contains many archaeological exhibits including ancient grave stones, an aqueduct from the 5th century BC, pottery, a 2,000-year old beehive and a mosaic from the 5th century AD.

Continue to the impressive House of Parliament with the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the city's famous statuesque Evzones, the presidential guards. Time your visit just right and see the changing of the guard ceremony which takes place every hour.

Crossing the National Gardens, you will see the Presidential Residence and the marble Panathenaic Stadium, where the first Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.

The walk continues to the beautiful neoclassical Zappeion Hall, in front of which tower the remaining Corinthian columns of the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, both Roman monuments.

No visit to Athens is complete without visiting the attractive and atmospheric part of the Athens, the Plaka. It's paved narrow streets nestle into the northeastern slope of the Acropolis and is filled with traditional Greek restaurants and souvenir shops.

Your tour will end at Mitropoleos Square, home to Athens' two Greek Orthodox Cathedrals. Then you come to the most famous neighborhood of Athens - Plaka, the neighborhood of gods - at the foot of the Acropolis and to Lysicrates monument.
