Spectacular and Very SpiritualReviewed by: christine l, February 2014
Weather was better than expected, but sunrise not as spectacular as I had hoped. Beautiful,
however,and interesting tour guide.
Nice tour. It is cold so dress warmly. Loved the Park ranger singing/chanting to welcome in the new day.Reviewed by: Edward R, January 2014
Sadly the sun did not peak out of the clouds this morning. Breakfast was nice and guide was informative.Reviewed by: Sue, February 2014
It was raining when we left Ka'anapali Beach area around 3 a.m., but we remained hopeful that would change. After a couple of additional stops in Lahaina and Kahului, we were on our way up Haleakala. The bus was comfortable, and the tour was not full, so a few of us had a seat to ourselves, which is nice at that hour of the morning. Unfortunately, the rain didn't let up as we continued up towards the summit. For some reason - not sure if it is intended, or a result of scheduling to ensure we have enough time to pick everyone up - we were there over an hour before the sunrise was to occur. I guess it's better to be there early. However, this is a lot of time to pass when it is cold, there is driving rain, and the only two places outside of the bus to wait - one of them being the washroom, the other being the visitor centre, which should probably fit about half the people we had crammed in there to stay out of the rain. They say that the weather on one part of the island isn't indicative of weather on another part of the island, but this wasn't the case on our tour day. The rain never let up, and although I am certain the sun rose, we never saw a hint of it. After piling back on the bus, soaked and cold, we went to the summit for the obligatory stop - some of us got out to take pictures, just to say we were there. We headed back down to Kahului for breakfast, which was welcome (I had taken a few snacks to get me through to the mid-morning breakfast, which I recommend others do). The breakfast was good, but the service was lacking. At least it wasn't raining when we got there, so we could enjoy the patio and view a bit before leaving Kahului. While I realize the weather can't be guaranteed, it is rather disappointing that there is no consolation for not even the slightest hint of a sunrise - i.e. a partial credit to take the tour again. Other than a drive around the island, and breakfast, there wasn't anything to enjoy. I *may* plan this excursion again.Reviewed by: Glenda G, February 2014
