San Francisco at Night: Segway Tour of North Beach, Chinatown and the Embarcadero
- See the sights illuminated at night
- Fully narrated tour
- Informative, friendly and professional guide
- All necessary equipment included
Depart from Beach Street to head up to North Beach, or what locals consider the city’s Little Italy. The streets are flanked by bustling Italian restaurants, with the scent of authentic warm dishes wafting from the doorways. Imagine the Beat poets and artists who once roamed the neighborhood as your guide shares history about the counterculture movement at Washington Square Park by Saints Peter and Paul churches.
Next, cruise over to nearby Chinatown, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Along the lantern-lit streets, you can peer into dim sum houses, admire temples, and appreciate souvenirs that dangle from windows and spill over display tables. If you visit in mid-winter, expect to see festive decorations in honor of the Chinese New Year.
From Chinatown, head east toward the waterfront to take in the Bay Bridge, which appears to be dressed in tinsel; it’s actually a light sculpture known as Bay Lights. Continue along the Embarcadero past the Ferry Building to Fisherman’s Wharf for a look at the historic piers and harbors. Follow your guide off the beaten path to see Fish Alley, Fisherman’s Chapel, a WWII Liberty ship, and the Pampanito submarine. Listen carefully: You might even hear the sharp crack of a Dungeness crab shell at one of local stands.
End your tour on a sweet note with a trip to the cheerfully lit Ghirardelli Square to learn more about how the famous chocolate is made. Then head over to the National Maritime Museum for a chance to take photos in front of the fleet of historic sailing ships berthed at Hyde Street Pier.
Here, pause to take in the nighttime views of Alcatraz before ending your Segway tour.

This tour was fantastic! The crew we had was very thorough in our instruction session. I thought I could master the segway immediately being athletic in nature but it took a while to let Droid (the name of my segway) do the work. I found myself over-thinking the process. Devon (I believe that is his name) was our instructor/leader and he gave me the confidence I needed master the segway. I have never had such an exciting adventure and the nighttime ride with the full moon only added to the beauty of the night. I thought the night trip was better than the day since there is less foot traffic and car traffic going on.
One note, and I don't want to be sounding prejudiced, but if you have a physical handicap, an unsteady balance problem or any issues with night vision don't take the segway tour. You are not only putting yourself in danger but others in the group and creating a huge liability problem for the instructor/guide and the Tour Company.
I'm 65 and I had the time of my life!
