Join an expert art historian for a guided walking tour of Milan’s incredible Brera Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca di Brera), one of Italy’s largest art galleries home to some of the most stunning religious artworks in the world. Stand in awe of centuries-old paintings from Italian masters such as Caravaggio and Raphael, snatched up by Napoleon on his art conquest through Europe in the 19th century.
Meet your group and guide at Milan’s Brera Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca di Brera) in the late morning. The Brera Picture Gallery is Milan’s main public gallery for paintings, containing one of the most distinguished collections of Italian paintings in the world. Founded by the Austrian Hapsburgs in the 18th century, the Pinacoteca was dramatically enlarged in the 19th century, when Napoleon took over the collection with confiscated works from around Europe. Today the gallery is an outgrowth of the Brera Academy, which shares its space in the Palazzo di Brera.
Your guide, an expert art historian, will give you an in-depth look at the prestigious artworks that lie inside the gallery. As in most Italian museums, religion is the predominant genre, however there are a number of pieces by English and other European artists, including newer works.
Let your eyes float over antique masterpieces by Italian artists including Raphael, Gentile da Fabriano, Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Tintoretto, Bramantino, Piero della Francesca, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Tintoretto and many more. Notable works include The Dead Christ by Mantegna, St Mark Preaching in Alexandria by Bellini, The Finding of the Body of St Mark by Tintoretto, The Marriage of the Virgin by Raphael and The Kiss by Hayez.
In the courtyard, admire the building’s 18th-century neoclassical architecture, and soak up the creative energy as Brera Academy art students mill about between classes.
