Everything was done as expected-all guides etc performed very well and the hotel in Sorrento was super good. A very good trip extension

On the whole, very good and worth the money. Local operator was Carrani Tours, and they were very hard to contact. We had expected a pick-up only to learn at the last minute they would not pick us up because we stayed in private apartment near Vatican. We don't speak Italian and had to find someone else (from a different excursion operation) to make a call for us. They were very hard to reach by phone and neglected to answer 3 emails from me, which is bad customer service, considering what we paid for this trip. Could have skipped Naples altogether, all we had was one hour there to walk into a central square and didn't really see much of Naples. Next was Pompeii, and tour there was fantastic. Guide was Fabbiano and he was very knowledgeable and made the history come alive. Connection from Pompeii was quite disorganized and confused; first it was the yellow bus, no the gray one, then back to the yellow one. Carrani reps didn't seem to know who was going where, even the bus drivers were confused! No matter, arrived in Sorrento to lovely accommodations at Capidomonte, which were spacious and unexpectedly comfortable (so-so food). Also, tour to Capri was excellent, well worth the money and guide Constantino di Losa was knowledgeable, friendly and personable, and spoke excellent English. Loved Blue Grotto, Anacapri, but not enough time overall.
On the final day (Friday) 13 of us in the group hired a private driver to go to Positano and Amalfi; he spoke no English and none of the passengers spoke Italian, which made organizing a little difficult. Furthermore, he talked on his phone the entire drive to Positano on a very dangerous road, not making the passengers feel very safe. Arnello, local Carrani rep, could have done a much better job arranging the extra tour, which cost 35 Euro per passenger. Final stop at a tourist trap was silly since we didn't even have time to finish a cup of coffee.
I found this tour very good value for money. After 2 hectic days in Rome we were glad to have someone take care of the details for us, we hopped on the bus and off we went to Naples our first stop. The Naples part of the trip could either be done more thoroughly or not at all. However, it does get you off the bus and walking around for an hour. Pompeii is the next stop which is a fast passed 2 hours. This is enough time to see the main sites and take pictures. It would be good to have a little extra time to wander around at leisure, but that's the nature of an organised tour. Our hotel in Sorrento was amazing. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Royal which was one of the 3 hotels in the Grand chain that the group was accommodated in. Breakfast was included - anything you could possibly want both days. Dinner was wonderful as well. We expected that there would be a set menu however, we where given a large range to chose from including 3 courses. I really couldn't fault our stay in this hotel with wonderful facilities and views. The trip to Capri was a good day. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the blue grotto which couldn't be helped. Instead we did a boat trip to Faraglioni which was fun. When you go to Anacapri take the chairlift ride. Definitely a highlight. Lunch on both days was ok. It is hard to accomodate a large group of people for lunch so don't expect the best Italian food you have ever tasted but it is satisfactory - also you will need to pay for any drinks you have. For our final day in we decided to stay in Sorrento. It was great to have some free time and we decided to sleep in and go for a walk around Sorrento and do a bit of shopping. It was great fun watching the madness of the Italian traffic while having a coffee.
We were back in Rome by 8pm, dropped off fairly close to our hotel.
Overall a great value trip. You have to remember that you get what you pay for. Yes, there are some bus changes. But be assured, they will not leave without you.
Tour started out rocky - the bus had some major problems with broken seats and the tour sould have provided a sound system in Naples. Having said that the rest of the tour was WONDERFUL. Our tour of Pompeii was excellent, the accomodations in Sorrento were unbelievalbe, and our Capris visit was delightful. Our time to self was spent at the hotel enjoying the wonderful day.
