Departing Times Square, you will be transported by shuttle bus to an awaiting boat which will take you to Battery Park at the southern tip of the island of Manhattan. From here, your native New York tour guide will escort you on a 10-block walk to the new National September 11 Memorial at Ground Zero.
Timed admission to the 9/11 Memorial is included, and your tour guide will accompany you into the site, built in honor of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The names of every victim of the attack are inscribed in panels alongside twin reflecting pools, which are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest man-made waterfalls in North America.
Your guide will then walk you past the Firefighters’ Memorial to St Paul’s Chapel and Trinity Church, both of which served as centers of triage and refuge during the September 11 attacks. During the walk, you will learn how the 9/11 attacks affected life in New York City and how New Yorkers dealt with tragedy. You will find out about the recovery effort and the new One World Trade Center tower that is being constructed at the site. You will also pass Wall Street, the site of the first terrorist attack on the United States in September 1920.
You will then take a short ride to South Street Seaport for your second boat cruise of the day. You'll cruise under iconic Brooklyn Bridge to reach the Fulton Ferry Landing, location of the first ferry service between Brooklyn and Manhattan in 1642. After a brief stop at this historic Brooklyn site, the boat will cruise out to the Statue of Liberty, the famous statue representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom.
You will cruise alongside Lady Liberty and enjoy fantastic photo opportunities of this internationally recognized icon of freedom. It's a fitting end to the historical, enriching and sobering experience you'll have on the NYC Freedom Tour by Land and Sea.
