Highlights

  • Explore the local streets on a walking tour of the city
  • Informative, friendly and professional guide
Meet at the Place Maubert metro station in the Sorbonne quarter. Your guide will take you on a journey through time as you explore the epicenter of Paris, where some of the city’s most legendary sinister events took place. Throughout the whole tour, you’ll hear little-known stories, fascinating mysteries and chilling legends about the city’s darker side.

Starting at Place Maubert – the site of tortures and executions in the 16th century – take a different route that tourists usually miss, down Rue Maitre Albert. Here, you’ll follow in the steps of Albert de Cologne, known as Albert the Great. Albert’s astounding achievements in science and theology in the 13th century gave him a reputation of being a magician or alchemist.

Next, cross the Seine to Ile de la Cité to discover the mysteries of this island. Pass in front of Notre-Dame Church to learn about the fables and mysteries surrounding this iconic cathedral, and wander down a narrow street to hear about the blood spilt here in the Middle Ages.

Visit St-Jacques Tower (Tour St-Jacques), the only part that remains of the 16th-century church from the bombings of the French Revolution. There are many stories surrounding this Gothic tower, but you’ll understand how fact beats fiction as your guide reveals the truth.

Cross over the Pont Neuf – the oldest bridge in Paris – and into the 1st arrondissement to Rue de la Ferronnerie, where you’ll visit a bronze equestrian statue of King Henry IV (the ‘Green Gallant’ King), commissioned by infamous Marie de Medici, Henry’s widow.

In Place Joachim-du-Bellay in the Les Halles district, see the site of the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, a defunct cemetery used in the Middle Ages until the late 18th century. It was the oldest and largest cemetery in Paris and had often been used for mass graves, but was closed because of overuse in 1780. Six years later, the bodies were unearthed and transported to the famous Paris Catacombs near Montparnasse.

Finally, end your tour at the tower of the ‘Black Queen,’ the coined name for Catherine de Medici, an Italian noblewoman who became the Queen consort of France in the 1500s after marrying King Henry II. Your guide will explain her precarious life and motivations – anxious to secure the power of her family, she was accused of poisoning those who opposed her and was blamed for the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. She also reportedly practiced black magic inside this tower. Some people say that her ghost still comes back to haunt the tower during stormy nights…
