Highlights

  • Includes free admission to top local attractions
  • Led by an art historian
  • Perfect introduction for first-time visitors
Meet at the venue in Via Medici in central Milan, where you'll start with an engaging 45-minute learning session with your art historian guide. Learn about the secrets behind Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper -- including the composition, lighting and painting techniques he used --and re-enact the painting with your group!

You'll also learn about the history of The Last Supper, which was commissioned in 1495 and depicts the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Your guide will peel back the multiple layers of meaning that this painting conveys, giving you a richer appreciation for what it represents. No artistic ability is required for this workshop – this is a fun learning experience suitable for anyone.

After your workshop, walk to where the actual The Last Supper painting is located to witness the masterpiece first-hand. Along the way, you’ll walk through some of the most atmospheric streets of Milan and see many interesting sights including the impressive Baroque facade of Palazzo Litta and the remains of the Roman Imperial Palace, dating back to when Milan was the capital of the western Roman Empire. As this tends to be a busy area, you'll be provided with personal headphones to hear your guide's live commentary as you walk.

Arrive at the refectory of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Santa Maria delle Grazie church and convent, which is now a state museum. Here, you'll stand in awe of the real The Last Supper painting, which covers a wall of the dining hall. Your guide will explain that the artwork was commissioned as part of the renovations of the church and its convent buildings by da Vinci’s patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Now armed with a deeper understanding of the painting, you’ll gaze at da Vinci’s masterpiece with new eyes.

After your 15-minute visit of the painting, you’ll have time for final questions and answers before concluding your tour. You're welcome to enter the nearby Santa Maria delle Grazie church on your own afterwards if you wish (entrance is free).
