Akeley Hall of African Mammals
Since its opening in 1936, the hall has been considered one of the world's great museum displays with 28 dioramas in this hall depicting some of the many animals and habitats of Africa. All the animals have been reconstructed with such scientific accuracy and detail that they appear astoundingly lifelike. It was named after Carl Akeley (1864-1926), the explorer, conservationist, taxidermist, sculptor, and photographer who conceived of, designed, and collected for this hall.

Guggenheim Hall of Minerals, and Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems
These halls contain exquisite treasures systematically arranged according to their physical properties to showcase an extraordinary range of size, color and shape. A highlight is the 563-carat Star of India, the largest and most famous sapphire in the world as well as the Patricia Emerald, a 632-carat specimen that is one of the very few large, gem-quality emeralds that have been preserved uncut.

Spitzer Hall of Human Origins
Opened in 2007, it is the first major exhibition to present, side by side, the mutually reinforcing evidence of the fossil record and cutting-edge DNA research. The hall covers millions of years of human history, from the emergence of our earliest ancestors through the evolution of our own species. It presents a fascinating mix of fossils, film, interactive media, life-size tableaux, ancient artifacts, and more.

Milstein Hall of Ocean Life
Newly renovated, the hall is now a 29,000 square-foot (2,694 square meters) fully immersive marine environment with high definition video projections, interactive computer stations, and eight new ocean habitat displays. Be dwarfed by the celebrated 94-foot (28.6 m) blue whale, one of the Museum's star attractions, floats in a "virtual ocean" created through dramatic lighting, video and sound effects. The Andros Coral Reef, a two level diorama containing 40 tons (36 metric tonnes) of coral, allows a unique view of this ecosystem above and below the water.

Whales: Giants of the Deep
(March 23, 2013–January 5, 2014)
Explore the latest in international research on whales, dolphins, and porpoises, and examine whale biology and the history of whaling in New Zealand. The exhibition showcases rare specimens—including a massive 58 ft-long (17.7 m) fully articulated sperm whale skeleton; life-size and scale models of whales common in the South Pacific; and ancient and contemporary whale bone treasures such as weapons, chiefly adornments and jewelry.

Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture
(Through August 11, 2013)
Celebrate cultures and cooking, historic meals and markets, and moments in our lives that we mark with food―as well as the ingredients that we have discovered and shaped over the course of thousands of years. As this exhibition takes visitors on a journey of growing, transporting, cooking, eating, and celebrating food, it also examines contemporary issues of environmental and human health, food security and feeding the world’s growing population today and tomorrow.

The Butterfly Conservatory: Tropical Butterflies Alive in Winter
(Through May 27, 2013)
Mingle with more than 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies in an enclosed habitat that approximates their natural environment with lush vegetation and live flowering plants. Simulated sunlight and the sound of howler monkeys, parakeets, quetzals, and other species complete the environment.

IMAX FILM: Flight of the Butterflies
(January 5, 2013 ―July 7, 2013)
Flight of the Butterflies takes viewers on the epic 3,000 mile (4,828 km) journey traveled every fall by half a billion Monarch butterflies. This migration, which begins in Canada and continues through the United States to Mexico, is the longest and most amazing insect migration on Earth.

Hayden Planetarium Space Show
Journey to the Stars
Travel through time and space to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky. Witness the first stars born, and experience brilliant supernova explosions that sent new kinds of matter coursing through the universe, into the atoms of our own bodies and the air we breathe. Visitors tour stellar formations, explore new celestial mysteries, and discover the fascinating, unfolding story that connects us all to the stars.

Frogs: A Chorus of Colors
(May 18, 2013―January 5, 2014)
Back by popular demand, this delightful exhibition will introduce visitors to the colorful and richly diverse world of frogs. More than 200 live frogs, from the tiny golden mantella frog, less than an inch long (2.5 cm), to the enormous African bullfrog, as big as 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter, will be shown in their re-created habitats, complete with rock ledges, live plants and waterfalls.
