Your afternoon starts at Pier 33, where you will board a ferry for the short trip to Alcatraz Island, lying just 1.5 miles (2.4km) from San Francisco. Known as The Rock, Alcatraz has served as both a military and federal prison during a turbulent history that dates back to the mid-19th century. Find out more about the Island's 29 years as a federal prison on the renowned 45-minute audio tour "Doing Time", featuring the voices of actual correctional officers and prisoners who lived and worked on the Island.
