Begin your Hampton Court Palace bike tour as you travel by train from bustling Central London to the idyllic borough of Richmond. Formerly a royal residence, this area is now home to London’s rich and famous. Once in the historic town of Richmond, hop on your vintage-style bikes with an optional basket (rental included) for a leisurely 7.5-mile (12-kilometer) ride along the banks of the River Thames.
Visit the great Richmond Palace, the former residence of the Tudor family and favorite residence of Queen Elizabeth I, who died there in 1603. Pedal past Richmond Hill and admire amazing views of the River Thames, which inspired poets and artists, including J.M. Turner and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Continue to Petersham Nurseries and take some pictures or buy some cake. Indulge yourself in the peaceful setting of the beautiful garden.
As you continue your full-day bike tour, see Marble Hill House shining on the other side of the river with its perfectly symmetrical Palladian architecture. Listen to spooky stories from your guide as you cruise past Ham House, which was built in 1610 and is reputed to be one of the most haunted houses in England. Your local guide will tell you about the eclectic history of the Eel Pie Island and take you to a charming pub overlooking the river, where you'll have free time for lunch (own expense).
After lunch, continue towards the Hampton Court Palace, where you'll leave your bikes and enjoy free time to explore the palace and its surroundings at your leisure. Discover the royal apartments as you listen to informative audio commentary about the history of the building. Learn how the Tudors, including the scandalous King Henry VIII, spent their private lives behind the palace walls. Be sure to take a stroll through the beautiful Hampton Court Palace gardens and get lost in the famous maze before returning to Central London by train.
