We found Pompeii very interesting and enjoyed the walk, just make sure to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for lots of walking. Honestly, we weren't as thrilled about Naples, as we were mostly on a bus tour. The scenery and history in Naples is quite wonderful.

The day trip was a full day, with long-ish coach drives both there and back. This was no problem, though, as the 'stops' were adequate. Our guide for Pompeii was excellent - a gentleman and scholar who enjoyed imparting his considerable knowledge. The only downside was that the quality of the lunch offered was disappointing, although the service was polite and keen to please.

Naples was OK, didn't get to do much or take many pictures as you don't get off the bus, but Pompeii is a must. What history, just amazing. The main attraction, don't miss out. As for the tour guide, don't expect too much information except for what you're looking at. We would have loved more info on the country, their ways and so forth.
