5 star rating: Highly Recommended

We had a fantastic excursion through Viator. It ended up being two of us on the tour, so we had a private, air-conditioned car, with our own personal guide. He was great, with lots of great local stories and knowledge. We originally were interested in the jeep tour to Marley's house but were so glad we went with the private tour. The sun is pretty strong up in the mountains, and we went though some areas where children chased the cars begging. I imagine in an open-aired car that would be a bit overwhelming.

What you get: Seeing and entering Bob Marley's home. Seeing his mausoleum which you are not allowed to photograph. General information from tour guides. A view of Jamaica outside of your "resort" experience. What it costs: It is a long, hot ride (our car had no air conditioning) that twists and turns through a mostly single-lane road that is very poorly maintained. Beware if you are prone to car sickness. The tour takes about 30 minutes, but there is really only 10 minutes worth of stuff there. The tour guides try to extend the "value" of the tour by leading group singing of Bob Marley songs. Be prepared to spend several hours round-trip on a rough road for about 30 minutes at the memorial. Overall: If you care to see the humble origins from where a legend came, this tour is a must-see. However, outside of seeing the home where he grew up and his mausoleum, don't expect much more. You do get to travel through a portion of Jamaica you might not see if you are otherwise spending your vacation at a resort. You see many poor villages and people, which is a humbling experience. The people appear to be kind, and wave at you as you drive by their villages. At the memorial, local children gather at the outside wall, forcing sticks with pieces of gum tied to the ends underneath the wall, begging that the patrons of the memorial buy their gum. Consider bringing money for these children, if you suspect seeing this might move you. It certainly moved me. If I were to do it over, I would bring more money. I felt bad only having 5 to tip our driver, 5 for the tour guide, and only 1 left over to give the children.
