Day 1: Beijing (L)
Begin your journey through Beijing’s changing history with a visit to a private museum. Gain insight into the traditional architecture and culture of this quickly modernizing city. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before driving past some of the new buildings that are redefining Beijing’s skyline. See ”the Egg,” the National Centre for Performing Arts and the China Central Television Headquarters, also known to locals as ”The Big Underpants.” You’ll also learn about the new developments that are constantly emerging around Beijing.
Continue on to the 798 Art Zone on the city's outskirts. This area is home to hundreds of galleries and some of China’s most prestigious up-and-coming artists and designers. Wander through the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, a non-profit gallery that presents exhibitions of both established and emerging Chinese artists.
Head back into Beijing and to the site of the 2008 Olympic Games, with its spectacular Birds Nest Stadium and Water Cube swimming complex. These world-famous structures are even more impressive up-close. Choose to end your day here and watch the Water Cube light up as the sun sets over Beijing or transfer back to Beijing, passing some of the city’s famous structures along the way. Overnight: Beijing
Day 2: Beijing (L)
Travel to the restored Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China, located 56 miles (90 kilometers) from Beijing. This section of the Great Wall offers unparalleled views from the Ming Dynasty watchtowers. Climb the watchtowers and traverse the wall at your own pace as your guide shares stories of the history and myths that surround the Great Wall. Descend the wall by toboggan or take in the aerial view by cable car (at an additional cost). You'll then enjoy a traditional Chinese lunch and finish your day with a reflexology foot massage.
Return to Beijing in the early evening where your tour concludes.
