Step back in time as you visit the historic town of Toconao. Located only a short scenic drive away from San Pedro, Toconao is famous because all of its houses were constructed out of the local liparite stone. Along the way, you'll pass the breathtaking Atacama Salt Lake, which is over 600 miles (1,000 km) long. Complete your tour with a visit to the Jeri Valley and the Chaxa Lagoon where you'll have the opportunity to see flamingos.
Upon leaving San Pedro de Atacama, you'll head along the side of the Atacama Salt Lake until you arrive at Toconao. Still today, Toconao remains a village where the inhabitants dedicate themselves to the working of the local liparite stone.
Visit the old church and wander around the handicraft shops before a short visit to the Jeri Valley, an oasis in the center of the desert. Then, continue to the Chaxa Lagoon where three types of pink flamingos breed.
