From Kona:

Enjoy a fully narrated adventure that starts with a hike through a Natural Area Reserve forest, home to rare native plants and birds. On the way to the park, you'll visit the famous Punalu`u black sand beach -- keep an eye out for giant sea turtles! Once at the park, the guide will lead you to active volcanic craters, steam vents and the historic Jaggar Museum. After experiencing, the volcanoes, enjoy a delicious dinner.

From Hilo:

Head to the Kilauea Volcano and Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and stay to watch the beautiful sunset! Board your tour vehicle in downtown Hilo and drive through Kalapana, a village completely destroyed by the advancing lava just a few years ago. First stop will be a walk across the recent lava flows to the newest black sand beach on the island where you'll walk on what was once was the best swimming beach on Hawaii Island. Next, head to the lava viewing area in Kalapana, where your vehicle drives over the lava flows that overran the highway. On your way to the next stop, the Painted Church, look for any current volcanic activity! Finally, your guide highlights the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, from active volcanic craters and steam vents to the historic Jaggar Museum. After, enjoy dinner and watch for current volcanic activity as the sun sets before returning to Hilo.

Special note: As volcanic activity changes constantly, molten lava cannot be guaranteed and may not be seen. Tour runs rain or shine.

Federal, state or county officials may close or open the lava viewing area at any time depending on conditions and hazards present. Every attempt is made to get as safely as possible to the lava viewing area and tours depart whether the area is currently open or closed as conditions do change constantly.
The drive from Kona to Hilo is approximately 2.5 hours each way with stops along the way.
