Itinerary:
Day 1: Depart Alice Springs (L,D)This morning, you will have an early start as you cross the desert heartland of Australia. Traveling west from Alice Springs to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the 270-mile (450-kilometer) journey passes through the vast, red desert scrubland, stopping at Stuarts Well, Mt Ebenezer and the Imanpa Art Gallery, showcasing paintings, traditional wood carvings and jewelry made by people from the bush. It continues on to Mount Connor, the giant salt pan of Lake Amadeus and finally, Curtin Springs Cattle Station before entering Ayers Rock Resort for lunch.
After lunch you will visit Walpa Gorge and walk the trail following a natural creek between the two tallest domes of The Olgas, or “Kata Tjuta” in the local Aboriginal language, meaning “many heads.” These red, rounded masses of rock are sacred to the Aborigines and feature prominently in stories of The Dreaming and Creation.
Sunset over Uluru and Kata Tjuta is simply awe-inspiring, an incredible light show with crimsons turning to rusts, and fading hues of pink to mauve. You have the choice tonight of the Sounds of Silence Dinner (additional expense) or traveling to a remote location where you will toast the end of the day with wine and canapés, followed by dinner at the hotel.
Overnight accommodation: Desert Gardens Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort
Day 2: Uluru to Alice Springs (B, L*)
Sunrise is equally impressive, bathing the surrounding countryside in soft light and awakening the flora and fauna to the day. You will travel out to Uluru (Ayers Rock) to witness the dawn of a new day. Today you will learn more about the traditional owners of the land through base walks around the rock. You’ll also discover the local flora and fauna, bush foods and Aboriginal Dreamtime stories handed down throughout thousands of years from generation to generation. You have the option to return to the hotel for breakfast or have a breakfast box if you choose to take the three-hour Mala Walk with a local Aboriginal guide (own expense) or climb Uluru (approximately 2.5-hours).
After breakfast, you will return to Alice Springs, where there will be time to visit the Cultural Center and its interpretative display and galleries. Your tour will end with the option to transfer to the Ayers Rock airport or return to Alice Springs late in the afternoon with a traditional barbecue lunch at Curtin Springs Station.
*Lunch if returning to Alice Springs
Please note: The Anangu (Aboriginal landowners) regard Uluru as a sacred site and strongly discourage climbing the rock. The Mala Walk is for guests wanting a direct indigenous experience; otherwise, a base walk will be with your group tour guide.
